History:
The myth behind the sanctity of Kedarnath is that the Pandavas wanted to seek the forgiveness of Lord Shiva for the large number of kin they had killed after having won over the Kauravas during the Mahabharata and felt guilty of having killed their own brothers and sought the blessings of Lord Shiva for redemption. In order to elude from them, Shiva hide himself in the form of a bull at Kedarnath. Bhima (one of the brother among Pandavas), recognized the deity and tried caught him. Shiva dived into the ground and left his hump behind, which is the main idol of worship here.

Geography:
Kedarnath is located at 30°44′N 79°04′E / 30.73°N 79.07°E. It has an average elevation of 3,553 metres (11,657 feet).

Weather:
Kedarnath has a cool climate all through the seasons.
Summers (May to August) are very pleasant with moderate climate, with average around 17°C. Summers is ideal for all sight seeing, temple visit and also for visiting nearby attractions.
Monsoons (September to October) are accompanied with scanty rains and also temperature drops down to 12°C.
Winters (November to April) are chilly days with average minimum touching near 5°C. Minimum can touch sub zero levels. Snow falling seen very often during winters.
