Food:
The Cuisine in Ooty comprises of both vegetarian and non-vegetarian dishes. On the culinary map of India Ooty may not enjoy a distinct place but the state to which it belongs that is Tamil Nadu has a very eminent place. As a result cuisines of the state is very popular in Ooty as well.

The Cuisine in Ooty mainly constitutes of idly (rice cakes cooked in steam), dosa (a pancake prepared from a batter of rice and lentil), uttapam (a pancake made from a batter of rice and lentil) and vada(doughnuts that are deep fried and made from a batter of rice and lentils), pongal (rice and lentils are boiled together and ghee and cashew nuts are added to it), uppuma(semolina cooked with dry lentils, pepper, mustard and cumin seed). Most of these dishes are served with coconut chutney prepared by grinding coconut and roasted chana, sambar (a lentil broth seasoned with spices) and mulaga podi (a mix of various dried lentils that are powdered and eaten with oil).

Ooty, or Ootcamund is a picture perfect little hill station that is frequented by myriads of tourists. Situated in the state of Tamil Nadu, there is hardly any distinction between the quintessential Tamil culture and the Ooty culture. The cultural potpourri of Ooty, however enriched by some unique features, peculiar to its own traditional heritage.

Tamil Language
The Tamil language is among the oldest of the Indian languages. This is the language from which all the other Dravidian languages originate. It is one of the official languages of many South Indian states, beside Tamil Nadu.
The alphabets of the Tamil language are unique. The script of this South Indian language is phonetic and not pictorial. It is a diverse language and survives in two different forms. Thus, spoken Tamil and written Tamil are not similar.
Tamil, being an ancient language, is the richest of all the languages of the Dravidian origin. Most of the courtly literatures of South India were composed in this language.
In the present days English is also among the most commonly used languages in Ooty.
